The Story of the Decade

The Only Surviving Relic of a Lost Masterpiece

In 2010, Tesla commissioned digital art pioneer Laurence Gartel to create its first-ever Art Car — a bold collaboration that fused cutting-edge technology with the emerging field of digital art. The car debuted to global attention, but soon after, it disappeared. The physical Tesla Art Car was lost, and research on its whereabouts confirmed its permanent disappearance.

More than a decade later, its story continues in a way no one could have predicted. The Gartel X Tesla Art Car #1 NFT is the sole surviving digital token tied to that vanished car. Originally envisioned as part of a 500-piece collection, only 51 NFTs were attempted to be minted before the project collapsed. With 50 never making it on chain and only one successfully minted — making it both a 1-of-1 NFT and the only existing record of Tesla’s first Art Car.

This duality makes it the only known case in art history where a masterpiece has been lost in both the physical world and almost lost digitally but managed to  survive on-chain. The Tesla Art Car is gone, but its legacy and soul survives through this single NFT — a digital relic that ensures it will never be forgotten.

The work’s provenance is well-documented:

The 2010 commission by Tesla.

Public coverage in technology and art media.

A 2022 press release, now permanently archived by the British Library.

Accompanying the NFT is a satellite-flown image from 2025, captured in orbit. This symbolic gesture reinforces the theme of survival and permanence, linking the project to exploration, innovation, and humanity’s future.

Today, the Gartel X Tesla Art Car #1 stands as:

The only surviving digital relic of Tesla’s lost Art Car.

The first blockchain work by Laurence Gartel, the Father of Digital Art.

The only documented case where a physical artwork was lost, but its legacy preserved through blockchain.

An irreplaceable object of digital heritage, uniting art, technology, and automotive history.

It is more than art — it is a paradox made permanent: a car that vanished, yet endures
